According to this MSNBC article, President Barack Obama has put forth a policy that, for me, clearly demonstrates a bias on his part that I object to.
Strongly.
Obama called in his memo for U.S. government bodies and agencies to report back within six months on their actions to better protect the rights of gay people abroad, including refugees fleeing persecution due to their sexual orientation.
In Geneva, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Washington had committed more than $3 million to start a global equality fund to support the work of civil society groups working on gay rights issues.I don't object to this policy because I sanction discrimination against gays. I don't. But it bothers me that our president is making a big deal about promoting fair and equitable treatment of gays abroad while ignoring or supporting discrimination against Christians - in particular Catholic Christians - at home.
The Catholic religion has never wavered in its opposition to abortion. Yet policies promulgated by this administration would cut off funding to Catholic clinics and hospitals which stand by this belief.
I suppose this shouldn't be surprising. He's quoted as saying, "If my daughter made a mistake, I wouldn't want her punished with a baby."
And while Obama threatens financial repercussions to countries which discriminate against gay and transgender people, he has sanctioned removal of "conscience protections" from medical staff with religious objections to abortion. Thus as a Catholic nurse, I could suffer legal and professional consequences for refusing to assist in an abortion... despite the fact that doing so would constitute a mortal sin in the eyes of my conscience, my church, and my God.
Gay rights? Fine.
But what about mine?
Maybe it IS time for a change.
Hi, You were chosen to be the Guest Host for the Terrific Thursday Blog Hop taking place tomorrow at www.messforless.net and www.wahmresourcesite.com. Please be sure to come by, link up and tell your friends!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in a way that I work in medical field as well and there would be no way to resist a treatment that I would not be willing to do come see me at http://shopannies.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI agree! The inequality of the issues that he seems to pick only shows his heart!
ReplyDeleteOh how I agree! To say that I've been troubled by his policies and statements relating to abortion is a vast understatement. In my opinion, this is just another example of his self-centered and self-serving attitude. Unfortunately he is the president of our country, so his self promotion directly and adversely affects me and the thousands of other Christians living in the US. It IS time for a change. I just pray that we are not the only ones in our country who believe this. Thank you for this post and for linking up through NOBH.
ReplyDeleteTwo wrongs don't make a right. His advocacy for one issue does not support or negate his advocacy for another issue.
ReplyDeleteWhy is America giving $3 mil. for this? We have hungry, hurting people here in America, and our President is spending out money on what?!?!?! Unbelievable!
ReplyDeleteYou really think that the Republicans have a candidate to beat him? I'm no fan of his, but for entirely different reasons. You have heard about the seperation of church and state, right? Also, Obama has nothing to do with abortions. It happened in 1973 by the Supreme Court. And Obama does not support the morning after pill to be sold over the counter. And what the hell gays have to do with this is beyond me.
ReplyDeleteI realize that this comment won't be up for long. You knew all this before you became a Catholic nurse. Your conscience, your church, and YOUR God?
Bigots who say "I have nothing against gays" and then use that as a bridge to your narrow hypocritical rhetoric makes me want to hurl.
But I will defend to the death your right to you opinions and your right to express them. But that's not about God, it's about democracy and our constitution.
God bless-

Your comment will stay, Bud, although I disagree with your position.
ReplyDeleteIndeed I've heard about the separation of church and state. And I certainly don't want the state interfering with my right to practice my religion - including NOT being forced to participate in an abortion, which would be a mortal sin in the eyes of my church.
Quakers are not forced to serve as soldiers in war, nor are the Amish. Even non-religious people who have a strong moral objection to war can be granted conscientious objector status and not have to go to war. Why should I be forced to do something which runs counter to my faith?
Obama didn't legalize abortions... I'm quite aware of Roe v. Wade, thanks. But he has pushed the abortion agenda to the max... even advocating legalization of "partial birth abortions". (According to the 2003 law - still in force - which banned this procedure, a "partial birth abortion" is defined as "An abortion in which the person performing the abortion, deliberately and intentionally vaginally delivers a living fetus until, in the case of a head-first presentation, the entire fetal head is outside the body of the mother, or, in the case of breech presentation, any part of the fetal trunk past the navel is outside the body of the mother, for the purpose of performing an overt act that the person knows will kill the partially delivered living fetus; and performs the overt act, other than completion of delivery, that kills the partially delivered living fetus."
If you and Obama have the stomach to support that, clearly we don't have anything much to talk about.
As to my "knowing all this" before I became a Catholic nurse... When I first became a nurse, there was no question of forcing a nurse who objected to abortion on moral or religious grounds to assist in this procedure. Obama has threatened to change that.
I apologize if you "hurl", but I stand by my beliefs, and I respectfully disagree with yours.
Thought provoking post. I want to be faithful to do my part -- praying and voting.
ReplyDeleteI too want to do my part...to pray and vote
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Seems like everybody's rights are protected except those of Christians. Thank you for sharing this thought provoking post.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Charlotte
Obama will not be known for his policies, but rather for the number of long, lavish vacations he took at the tax payers expense while Americans were hurting. Reagan used to spend Christmas in DC so the secret service men assigned to protecting him could spend the holiday with their families. This guy is back in Hawaii, again...ten grand a night accomodations,...again. Apparently, the White house and/or Camp David just arent good enough. Am I ready for change? oh, you betcha. There are people hungry in my community and he is spending 3 mil abroad on hot button topics for the sole purpose of trying to get re-elected.
ReplyDeleteWe have to get to the voting polls to make it count and our voices heard. I've been sickened recently when I learned that the abortion clinic I pray at on Thursdays has offered a deal - 20% off of abortion surgery. As if it's a Christmas sale.
