It seems that lawmakers in Mexico have proposed a solution for the high divorce rate in Mexico. (More than 50% of Mexican marriages end in divorce, and most of those occur within the first two years of marriage.)
Two year marriage contracts.
Yes, you heard that right.
According to this news article, two years would be the minimum term of the contract; it could be drawn up for a longer period of time if the couple so desires. According to Leonel Luna, the Mexico City assemblyman who helped author the bill, "The proposal is, when the two-year period is up, if the relationship
is not stable or harmonious, the contract simply ends... You wouldn't have to go through the tortuous process of divorce." If, however, the honeymoon is not over, you could re-enlist.... er, I mean, renew the contract. Isn't that special?
So, dear husband of mine, after 39 years + 4 months, you better toe the line. Our contract is up for renewal, and sometimes things are less than 100% "harmonious".
I know my opinion will be unpopular, but I don't think that's a bad idea. With the way marriages work now days, it makes some sense.

I heard about this...crazy! I've been married 11 years now and we have not been 100% harmonious either. It actually takes work...imagine that...lol. Thanks for linking up to the NOBH. :)

ReplyDeleteMy hubbie mentioned this to me. I'm thinking it's another bandaid on a deeper problem. Marriage does take work, and too many folks are growing up thinking that everything should be easy, including marriage.
