Or so says 61-year-old Roy Lester, who was fired from his lifeguard job - one he'd held for 40 years - because he refused to wear a Speedo swim suit to take the required swim test. Mr. Lester wanted to take the test in biking shorts, which doesn't seem unreasonable to me. His employers disagreed, and he was fired as a result.
Mr. Lester has been quoted as saying, "I wore a Speedo when I was in my 20s. But come on. There should be a law prohibiting anyone over the age of 50 from wearing a Speedo." He believes the Long Beach, NY's Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is using the Speedo excuse to eliminate older workers.
In some cases, maybe he's right.
I'm on his side. I'm 53 and wouldn't wear Speedos if you paid me.
ReplyDeleteWhich, believe me, you wouldn't.
Speedos - eewwggh! Good on Roy Lester for being smart about things and shame on management for being so dumb.
ReplyDeleteThe style of swimming pants worn by lifeguards does not save lives, the person in them does.
Yeah there should be a law for that! Lol!
ReplyDeleteWhatever happened to common sense?
ReplyDeleteI think swimwear should be outlawed.
ReplyDeleteFi you have hit the nail on the proverbial. Mind you, I don't much fancy droopy drawers in the photo! But I wouldn't sack him.
ReplyDeleteThis made me LOL. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteso funny! stopping by from 6WS
ReplyDeleteI agree! and thanks for the great laugh!
ReplyDeleteOh my...what a stupid rule! Speedos? That is just crazy...especially for an older guy! I saw this on tv...and he looked great in the biking shorts!
ReplyDeleteWhat a world we live in now!
Happy SWS
Linda
even in my 20s, i did not where a speedo! i believe he's right, they couldn't just say 'old people go home', but they could make them feel uncomfortable enough...
ReplyDeleteYikes! He is definitely right!

He's right, there ought to be a law. But I think he should have made one exception - put on the speedo and made every one of them see WHY there ought to be his law. And thumbed his nose at their pitiful excuse to fire and older life guard.
ReplyDeleteAw, bless his heart.
ReplyDeleteFound and am following you from Six Word Saturday!
He's a lifeguard, not an Olympic athlete. I'm all for retesting skills and abilities but I don't see why it has to be done in a Speedo. The test should be done in the same clothes he wears on the job.
ReplyDeleteThanks for playing 6WS!
I don't think that ANYONE should wear a speedo!!!
ReplyDeleteDo you think it was their sneaky way of firing him without it being called age-ism?
Wow, I absolutely agree with him, that sure is shady! New follower via Super Stalker Sunday looking forward to future posts! :)
