I'm sure that was embarrassing to her, but really... who goes out shopping wearing a bikini top?
I'm not far different from this lady in age, but I learned at my mama's knee how to dress for shopping expeditions. Actually, Mom went way overboard on the "get dressed" deal. We used to have to dress in our Sunday best... patent leather shoes and all... to go shopping downtown. Those days are long gone; nobody I know would dress up to go shopping nowadays. Jeans or shorts are just fine by me now!
But when did a bikini top become appropriate shopping attire for anyone, regardless of their age?
And as for her attorney? Give me a break. To quote the article, "He said the experience was embarrassing, but he is more concerned about the way McMillan was treated because she is disabled from injuries suffered in motorcycle crashes".
Can someone please explain to me why that is relevant?
Sheesh.
No top, no shoes, no service-see it all the time at the shore, seems like a good rule of thumb when shopping. Like you we used to get dressed up to go shopping, especially if we were going into the 'city' (the huge metropolis of Philadelphia was a big deal). But that was 35 years ago. Now I head to the mall in comfortable pants and a shirt, though not necessarily a dressy one. I'm 58--in my opinion I'm too old to hit the mall in a tank top (I look horrible in them, if you look good in one fine, but not me), shorts (which I only wear in Disney World the home of the worst dressed people in the world due to the heat, I admit, I used to be one of them, but I'd never wear them anywhere where someone I knew would see me! My apologies for those of you who might have seen my knees at Disney!) I no longer wear mini skirts or other skimpy attire. I'm just TOO OLD (and a bit overweight for some of those things). I don't think Walmart should have to let anyone shop in their bikini top no matter what their age, but I don't think it's something I'd get an attorney over if I were her, I'd just leave and come back DRESSED!
ReplyDeleteI moved to the USA a few months ago. Obviously there are many things I appreciate, quite a few I dislike and some outright confusing. What you described is one of them. I have seen so many signs: no shoes, no top, no service. It never in my entire life crossed my mind that someone truly could consider acting in a way that such signs become necessary. I am 50, I love being tanned without having any stripes on my body, I dislike that I hardly find a place around me where I can do so. Yet it never ever would cross my mind to go leave the house half nude. Value and ethics....
ReplyDeleteI often wonder what people are thinking leaving the house dressed the way they are. It's sad. I should be able to take my children shopping with me without having to worry about what they'll see.

oh dear me...I am 52 and I would not even want my daughters to wear a bathing suit top to go shopping!!! Seriously!
ReplyDeleteAt 51..she really should know better than to go into a public store like that! There is no excuse.I agree with Melody..I would teach my own child, no matter how old, that you must wear a shirt while shopping! Come on now. LoL. Following from the weekend blog hop!

Days of decency are gone! I won't even wear a bikini top to the pool, and I'm in my (very late) 20's! Just found you through Susie B Homemaker and am now following!

Ewww! LOL! Thanks for joining in the Planet Weidknecht Weekend Hop!
ReplyDeleteIt's a sign of the times. Modesty, morality and decency are lost (for the most part). Hey Paula! They do have a "nude beach in Seaside Oregon, or at least they did back in the 70's! LOL! I didn't realize it was a nude beach until I got out and started walking toward it and got an eye full! LOL! I also know several ladies that go to tanning salons so they can tan with no lines. It's very private. You can lock the door behind you. I am too self conscious for that though. I even wore long shorts instead of a bathing suit to tan in! LOL! Even being by myself! LOL! I guess you can tell what my answer would be as far as that lady with the bikini top. You know something else? I bet she would get mad if any men or boys stared at her. LOL! I bought me something called a tankini to take on our fishing vacation in June. It was a bathing suit top but it looked more like a shirt. It covered me to my waist in front and from the middle of my back down. I still wore a cover-up when I got out of the water. There is no sense in advertising. That's my quarter's worth! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI have seen a woman of about that age shopping at Wal-mart in my town, she was wearing a string bikini top and cut-off shorts.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever seen the emails about "People of Wal-Mart"? I don't know what it is about that store that attracts such strange dressers.
Visiting from Say Hi Sunday. Hope you'll stop by to say hello.

ReplyDeleteThere's a place and time for everything. We need to dress appropriately for where we are and a bathing suit is for the pool, beach or lake. Just saying.
ReplyDeleteUm, have you SEEN the people of walmart website? :) Sounds like this was pretty conservative, really. Snicker.
ReplyDeleteHmm, maybe she thought that Walmart is by the beach:). Next time, Walmart should make a note on their front door: NO TOPS PLEASE!
ReplyDeleteFollowing your lovely blog. I am also inviting you to visit Momma's Lounge where you can (add your blog ), express yourself, add your business/giveaway, and meet more mom bloggers, or simply visit The Quiet Mom's blog (http://olahmomma.com). A follow back is greatly appreciated.

Hi just calling by whilst blog hopping. I totally agree. I wouldn't be wearing a bikini into a shopping centre and I am 34. Not really appropriate thing to wear.Be sure to come by and say hi and join my Making Goals Monday Blog Hop http://acceptingandembracingautism.com/2011/08/01/making-goals-monday-blog-hop-3/ Sarah
ReplyDeleteHi, just found you on the blog hop and following now. I've seen tons of stores with the signs that say "no top, no shoes, no service"...Maybe I'm just over-modest, but I don't see how a bikini top is any different than a bra...and who would go shopping in just a bra? I have a feeling the whole disability comment the lawyer made just means they're sue-happy and trying to get more money out of the whole situation.
ReplyDeleteOh, the world we live in.

Ha. That is too funny. I agree with you!
