For the past week or so, there's been an unearthly sound all through the daylight hours. It goes away at night. I thought it might be some sort of strange machinery. My husband thought it could possibly be a car or house alarm. According to the local news coverage, law enforcement officials had received multiple calls from concerned citizens. Some thought the sound might be from the nuclear power plant. Others said it sounded like a U.F.O.
It turns out it's a type of cicada that remain underground for 13 years, then emerge to mate. I actually posted a few pretty decent pix of these critters last week - the post is found here.
According to Clyde Sorenson, an entomology professor at North Carolina State University, "They come out in mass, all at once. This is a really cool natural phenomenon and the only place it happens is in eastern North America." The WRAL news report goes on to report that Sorenson said there can be as many as a million per acre. The males flex little plates on the sides of their abdomens that are covered in ridges of exoskeleton; this is what makes the sound, which serves as a mating call. Looking around the internet a bit, I think I've narrowed down the cicada species to "magicicada" - a charming name.
For those who don't live in eastern North America, I took out my handy dandy camera and shot a video this afternoon. I apologize in advance for the poor focus at the beginning of the video; I promise you it gets better. But believe it or not, the sound on this video is quite muted. We have all the windows in the house fully closed and can still hear the "U.F.O." sound.
Sorenson reassures the citizenry that these cicadas don't bite and aren't harmful to humans. He says folks used to eat them.
I promise they don't spark my appetite!
Wow! I haven't heard them here. I think if they made that sound all day long it would drive me nuts. I will go check around and see if they are here in NY.
ReplyDeleteInteresting - I don't think we have them right now. I'm a new follower from the Welcome to the Weekend hop. Have a good weekend!

My goodness! They do sound like a whole lot of car alarms. we don't have any cicadas in England except one: the New Forest cicada. Which is where I live. But I've never heard them.
ReplyDeleteOk, yeah....I can see where people would think UFO's. Miss *a* came running into the room and said "What's that creepy sound?!?"
ReplyDeleteOn one hand, it's awesome to be part of this rare natural phenomenon. On the other, those bugs need a curfew. :)

Interesting! It's so weird that they only emerge after 13 year.
ReplyDeleteGod is so creative, isn't he? What an amazing thing every 13 years. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThankfully I haven't heard them here in Mount Airy. I hope you have a blessed weekend.
ReplyDeleteThose are creepy and cool looking at the same time. We have the green cicadas here in the midwest. To me they sound like tornado sirens here lol.

It was a loud sound for a tiny creature like that, amazing. Mine is here Points of View and Thoughts, thanks
ReplyDeleteNo cicads here, but I have lived places where there were cicadas, must have been during this part of their life cycle. That sound can be irritating, if you have to hear it all day long, but they are interesting insects.
ReplyDeleteIck! Glad you weren't abducted by aliens. I've seen their exoskeletons hanging around... gross me out. Glad we don't get them here.
ReplyDeleteI am following you from the weekend blog hop.

Stopping by from Smile with me Saturdays...
ReplyDeleteWow! What a crazy sound! We had cicadas down in texas but they did not sound like that. That is pretty interesting; funny the theories people came up with :)
Those are like the ones that come to Ohio. The last time was 2004 (I think). It was terrible. You couldn't get to your car without being covered in them. Forget trying to use windshield wipers. They would mass on trees and then fall dead. The stink was horrible. Birds couldn't fly well from eating too many. It was awful.
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming by Tiki Hut Sunday
I live in Northern Ohio and we have cicada's as well but I've never seen so many of them like this. We have problems with May flies, so much so they seem to 'dust' everything outdoors. What we've had in our yard are cicada killers - their ground wasps and love to make tunnels in your yard. So we have piles of sand scattered over our lawn from them making their entrance and exit holes for their tunnels. They don't bother people just cicadas. Maybe we should send some your way : D
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Buzz By Sunday - following you back to visit : D

Talk about white noise:) I have lived in a state once when they came out and it was truly amazing to walk out of your house with these things everywhere. I got used to them but didn't love it

Hi Sue, your picture of the alien jumped right out at me on the NOBH link up! I had to come over and check it out :) We had the cicadas come and visit us a few years ago and I didn't enjoy them so much. Walking my son to school was a task of trying to be careful to not step on them and hear "crunch." They would also fly in a spazzy kind of way and land on us... not thrilled with that either. My son thought it was cool and my dog loved to eat them! Yuck.

I found one of those bugs in high school when it wasn't supposed to be a cicada year. Showed it to my biology teacher and got some extra credit.
