Brother Lawrence, author of The Practice of the Presence of God, makes it sound quite easy to maintain an awareness of and a connection with God through the course of our days. Here is his advice:
God does not ask a great deal of us: a brief remembrance from time to time, a brief act of adoration, occasionally to ask him for his grace or offer him your sufferings, at other times to thank him for the graces he has given you and is giving you.One way I try to do this is to send up silent prayers for people I pass by in the course of the day... particularly if I see a face that looks troubled or overhear a conversation that speaks of some difficulty in the life of another. But in all honesty, I find it easy to have good intentions, but much more difficult to put them into action.
And so I ask you... How you you "practice the presence of God"?

When we were in the novitiate (many years ago!), we stopped whatever we were doing when the clock chimed the hour and said "Let us remember the holy presence of God." Whoever you were working with would respond, "Let us adore his divine majesty." Today I think I become more and more aware of God's presence in my life with lines of articles that I read, certain phrases of the psalms that we pray together each evening that somehow just speak words that I need to hear, or in words of a song that I hear or that just keeps running through my head. I like your idea of a silent prayer for people I pass during the day.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I love the idea of a silent prayer for someone throughout the day - that's a great idea. What I've started doing is when I tell someone I'll pray for them, I literally stop what I'm doing (not in a big showy way) but just silently say a prayer right then. I don't want to forget, or write their name down and not remember why I'm praying for them, etc. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend ~ ♥
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful expression of "practicing the presence of God." I try to keep an attitude of prayer and praise throughout my day. Since I am a freelance writer I am home alone most days. As I go about my tasks I find ways to praise and partition God. Ironing? pray for the one who wears the garments. Preparing food? Thankfulness and prayer for those who do not have enough to eat. Reading a blog? Prayer for the blog writer. It keeps God's presence warm in my heart.
ReplyDeleteI am a little bit late for the friday blog hop, but I followed you anyway.
