"I love him to death."

Have you ever heard that expression?

Apparently some pet owners have, as Donald Elllis’ Yorkshire Terrier, Tom Tom, found out. According to this MSNBC story, when Mr. Ellis died, he left explicit instructions that Tom Tom – who was, by all accounts, both happy and healthy – was to be euthanized. It wasn’t because of concern that Tom Tom wouldn’t be properly cared for. Rather, it was because the two were to be buried together. The story goes on to give other examples of this rather macabre form of pet ownership.

The longer I live, the more challenging I find it to be to define “love”.

When I was a kid, I thought it was a combination of palpitations and hyperventilation. If it were that, we’d find a lot of teenagers admitted to the cardiac unit.

Most dictionary definitions make reference to an emotional component. If it were simply an emotion, no marriage would last for very long.

Some folks emphasize another angle, that of commitment. If that were the case, it could be boiled down to a business arrangement or an employment contract.

So I’m not sure what love is, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t involve killing a healthy animal in order to be able to spend the centuries together in a coffin.

But that's just me.

  1. Wow...that's a bit disturbing, isn't it?
If I were to define "love", I would say that it is the expression, experiencing, and sharing of God's life in us!
