What to pray for?

There are times when I wonder what to ask God for when I pray. As an example, a member of my family has been critically ill. She may not survive, and if she does, it will be a long battle with lots of ups and downs. In this situation (and, for that matter, in many others), I don’t know what to ask for. Because one thing I’ve learned over time – God does a much better job of managing the world than I do. I’ve seen many instances where my prayers were answered with a resounding “No”, and yet the end result was far superior to anything I could have anticipated had the answer been “Yes”.

More and more lately, this is my prayer:

Lord, I don’t know what’s best in this situation, but you do.
Please, Lord, teach me to understand, accept, and cooperate with your will.

  1. My mother often says that only God knows what's best. Make the request simple and then let your participation in the process be trusting Him. She says when she has made the prayer complicated by making so many stipulations she often failed to see the answer because she thought the prayer had not been heard or answered. So for me many times it is just "simple"...and repetitive. Have a grand day!!! Cathy

  2. I agree, I keep it simple, don't ask for anything complicated because I don't know what's best in the long-run, so I normally just thank him for my blessings and he knows what's in my heart for the rest of the stuff.

    Have a great day!

  3. I've been having exactly the same thoughts lately. I know Jesus said to ask whatever we wish in his Father's name (if we've been abiding in him by obeying his command to love others as he loves us), and it will be given us, but it's hard to know what to ask. I find myself asking God to help me learn the lesson in a difficult situation, and asking him to help me trust His plan. But I firmly believe he does answer specific prayers. You hit the nail on the head: I just don't know what to ask sometimes.
