Today is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi

Most of us are familiar with the words of St. Francis' most famous prayer, "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace." Less familiar - but no less beautiful - is this prayer, also attributed to St. Francis of Assisi:

Great and glorious God, and my Lord Jesus Christ
Enlighten the darkness of my mind.
Give me a right faith, a firm hope, and a perfect charity.
Grant that I may know you, Lord
in order that I may always and in all things
act according to your most holy and perfect will.
Amen.

One of my favorite musicians is John Michael Talbot. In one of his albums, "Troubadour of the Great King", he takes favorite scriptures and prayers of St. Francis of Assisi and set them to music. Here's one of my favorites:

  1. I saw Francis of Assisi, a movie about his life, a few weeks ago. Loved his take on not owning property when he said:

"Grant me the treasure of sublime poverty: permit the distinctive sign of our order to be that it does not possess anything of its own beneath the sun, for the glory of your name, and that it have no other patrimony than begging."

  2. I didn't end up celebrating ol' Francis at my blog (I suppose you noticed it was a busy weekend for me), so it was delightful to see him on your blog and read a less familiar quote of his.

Good to meet you... did you find me from the Saturday Evening blog thing? Looks like we live in the same neck of the woods. I get by your city pretty regularly to visit my sister... maybe we should meet each other someday.
